Black-green Privet "Atrovirens" (Ligustrum vulgare "Atrovirens")

The Black-green Privet, known scientifically as Ligustrum vulgare "Atrovirens," is a robust and versatile deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub. Renowned for its dense foliage, this privet variety features dark green, glossy leaves that maintain their color well into winter, providing year-round interest in the garden.

Growing to a height of 6-12 feet and a spread of 4-6 feet, the "Atrovirens" privet is perfect for hedging and screening purposes. It produces small, white, tubular flowers in late spring to early summer, which are attractive to pollinators. These flowers are followed by black berries that provide food for birds in the autumn.

"Atrovirens" is highly adaptable and thrives in a variety of soil types, though it prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. It is also notably hardy and can withstand urban pollution, making it an excellent choice for city gardens.

Prized for its ease of maintenance, the Black-green Privet "Atrovirens" responds well to pruning, allowing gardeners to shape it to their desired form. This makes it an ideal choice for formal hedges, privacy screens, and topiary designs.
